1. Introduction to The Virtues of the Holy Quran:
All praise is
due to Allah and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah — may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
The Holy Quran
is the word of Allah Almighty — falsehood cannot approach it from before it or
from behind it. Allah says: “…………And indeed, it
is a mighty Book. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind
it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.” (Fussilat
41:42)
Allah revealed
the Quran to His servant and Messenger Muhammad — peace be upon him — through
the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), in a clear Arabic tongue. Allah says: “Say: The Holy Spirit has brought the revelation from
your Lord in truth.” (An-Nahl 16:102), Ibn Katheer
said: “This refers to Jibreel, who descended with the entire Quran.” and Allah
says: “And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the
revelation of the Lord of the worlds. The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it
down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], that you may be of the warners — in a clear
Arabic language.”
(Ash-Shuʻara 26:192–195). And Allah
Also says: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the
message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian. (Al-Hijr 15:9)
Reciting the
Quran is an act of worship like all other acts of worship — indeed it is among
the forms of remembrance (dhikr) for which the reciter is rewarded. For this
reason the Prophet — peace be upon him — urged us to recite it and informed us
of its immense reward.
Frequent
recitation of the Quran generates a deep pleasure, spiritual tranquility, and
serenity of heart within the believer who delights in it. As Allah says: “those who have faith and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance
of God- truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace” (Ar-Raʻad 13:28).
And By
repeatedly reading with delight, the reader will strive to understand the
Quranic text with conscious awareness and deep insight. When one understands
with awareness and insight, one inevitably enters the realm of contemplation
and reflection upon the verses of Allah. Then one acts upon them with
knowledge, awareness, and clarity.
In contrast, the one who reads the Quran without delight in its recitation and
without striving to understand the verses being read, that person is like one
reading a newspaper or a story — and may never reach the stage of contemplation
and reflection.
Allah said of
the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah: “Alif. Lām. Mīm.
This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear
Allah” (Al-Baqarah 2:1-2).
And in Surah
Al-Israʻ: “Indeed, this Qur’ān guides to that
which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous
deeds that they will have a great reward” (Al-Israʻ
17:9)
2. The Benefits and Virtues of the Quran
Numerous hadiths illustrate the superiority
of the Quran, among them the follows:
a.
The Best among You
Al-Bukhari
narrated from ʻUthman — may Allah be pleased with him — that the Prophet —
peace be upon him — said: “The best among you
(Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih)
b.
The Skilled and the Struggling
Reciter
Al-Bukhari and
Muslim narrated from ʻAʻisha — may Allah be pleased with her — that the Prophet
said: “The one who is proficient in the
recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes
(angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing
his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.”
(Sahih)
c.
The People of the Quran are the
People of Allah
Al-Nasaʻi, Ibn
Majah, and Al-Hakim narrated with a sound chain from Anas — may Allah be
pleased with him — that the Messenger of Allah said: “’Allah has His own people among mankind.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of
Allah, who are they?’ He said: ‘The people of the Qur’an, the people of Allah
and those who are closest to Him.’” (Hasan)
d.
The Gathering for Recitation
It was narrated
that Abu Hurairah — may Allah be pleased with him — said that the Messenger of
Allah said: “…………..No people gather in one of
the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and teaching it to one another,
but the angels will surround them, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy
will envelop them and Allah will mention them to those who are with Him………..” (Sahih)
e.
The Immense Reward of Quran after
Death and in the Hereafter
Abdullah ibn ʻAmr
— may Allah be pleased with them — reported that the Prophet said: “The
one who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection:
‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world.
Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite.” (Hasan Sahih)
Abu Hurairah Narrated:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Quran will come
on the Day of Resurrection and will intercede for its companion, saying: ‘O
Lord, adorn him.’ So he is dressed in a crown of nobility. Then it says: ‘O
Lord, give him more.’ So he is dressed in a garment of nobility. Then it says:
‘O Lord, be pleased with him.’ So He is pleased with him. Then it is said to
him: ‘Recite and ascend, and for every verse he will be increased by one good
deed.'” (Hasan)
And It was narrated from Ibn
Buraidah that his father told that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: “The Quran will come on the Day of
Resurrection, like a pale man, and will say: ‘I am the one that kept you awake
at night and made you thirsty during the day.” (Hasan)
Abū Umāma said
he heard God’s messenger say, “Recite the Qur’ān,
for on the day of resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who
recite it. Recite the two shining ones, Baqara and sūra Āl Imrān (Qur’ān, 2 and
3). for on the day of resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades,
or two flocks of birds in ranks pleading for those who recite them. Recite sūra
al-Baqara, for using it produces blessing and abandoning it produces regret,
and the slothful are unable to recite it.” (Sahih)
f.
Categories of People in Their
Relationship to the Quran
Al-Bukhari
narrated from Abu Musa Al-Ashʻari that the Prophet gave the following beautiful
analogy, that he –peace be upon him – said “The
example of a believer who recites the Qur’an is that of a citron (a citrus
fruit) which is good in taste and good in smell. And the believer who does not
recite the Qur’an is like a date which has a good taste but no smell. And the
example of an impious person who recites the Qur’an is that of Ar-Rihana (an
aromatic plant) which smells good but is bitter in taste. And the example of an
impious person who does not recite the Qur’an is that of a colocynth which is
bitter in taste and has no smell.” (Sahih)
3. The Goal of Consistent Quranic Recitation
The purpose of
consistent recitation of the Quran is to arrive at understanding it,
contemplating its verses, and acting upon its commands and avoiding its
prohibitions in the reality of life — so that we may be among those guided to
the path of truth.
Allah has
described those whom He guided: “Those who
listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it: those are the ones
whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.” (Az-Zumar
39:18)
Allah revealed
this Book so that its readers would reflect upon it and its people of
understanding would remember: “[This is] a
blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], that they might
reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” (Sad 38:29)
Note: The Muslim should be consistent in reciting the Quran and revising
it, so that it remains firmly rooted in both the mind and the heart. Al-Bukhari
and Muslim narrated from Ibn ʻUmar that the Messenger of Allah said: “The example of a man who has memorised the Qur’an is
like that of a hobbled camel. If he remained vigilant, he would be able to
retain it (with him), and if he loosened the hobbled camel it would escape.”(Sahih)
The reward for
each letter of the Quran is ten good deeds, and Allah multiplies reward for
whom He wills — especially in Ramadan and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.
