Tips for Fasting While Performing Umrah in the Heat

performing umrah

If you are physically and financially able, then performing Umrah is a must-act of worship for you. Ramadan is a special month for Muslims because of its spiritual importance. However, you can perform Umrah whenever you want. When you are performing your Umrah in Ramadan, it multiples its rewards.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

“An `Umrah performed in the month of Ramadan is equal to a Hajj.” (Another version adds: “or a Hajj with me.”)

If you are from UK and happen to be in Makkah during Ramadan, when it’s hot, it really becomes challenging to fast in the scorching heat and keep up with your rituals. But if you follow some tips, it’ll become easier for you to manage your fast alongside the rituals of Umrah. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing some tips that will help you manage the physical challenges so you can focus on your worship.

The Challenges of Fasting While Performing Umrah

Doing Umrah means a lot of walking, and the sun in Makkah is very hot. This can make you dehydrated and sick. Because you are fasting, you cannot drink water during the day. For British Muslims travelling from a cooler climate, the heat can feel even stronger, so it’s important to plan ahead. This is why it’s so important to drink a lot of water at night, between the evening prayer (Maghrib) and the morning prayer (Fajr).

Fasting while performing Umrah Allah reminds us of the purpose of fasting:

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may attain Taqwa (God-consciousness).”

(Al-Baqarah 2:183)

When you fast, it is a way to feel closer to Allah. This verse teaches us exactly the same thing. When you stay healthy, you can put all your energy into worship and not be distracted by feeling bad or exhausted. You can book your Umrah with a reliable Travel agency and check their Ramadan Umrah deals from the UK so they take care of your logistics, and you can fully focus on your Ibadah.

Practical Tips for Fasting During Umrah in the Heat

Stay Hydrated After Iftar and Suhoor

You will lose fluids during Tawaf and Sa’i, even when walking slowly. So, it’s important to drink lots of water at night, between Iftar and Suhoor. It is best to avoid drinks with caffeine, like coffee and sodas, because they can cause your body to lose even more water.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“The best drink in this world and the Hereafter is water.”

(Ibn Majah, 3424)

The best way to stay hydrated is to use simple water. Don’t drink a lot at one time. Try to sip water regularly between the evening prayer (Maghrib) and the morning prayer (Fajr). This will help your body stay hydrated better.

Choose Light and Nutritious Meals

When you eat the right foods at Suhoor and Iftar, it makes a big difference in your energy. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged Suhoor, saying:

“Eat Suhoor, for in Suhoor there is blessing.”

(Bukhari, Muslim)

When you choose your meal, try to choose healthy foods like dates, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. Don’t eat fried or greasy foods, as they can make you feel tired. A healthy morning meal (Suhoor) will give you energy for the whole day.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

You have to walk a lot while performing Umrah rituals. It’s too hot in Makkah, so you should take measures to avoid direct heat. Try to stay in the shade, wear light clothes that are not tight. Use an Umbrella or a hat to block the sun. It’s also a good idea to do your walking (Tawaf and Sa’i) at night or early in the morning when the weather is not so hot.

The Prophet (PBUH) also said that it’s important to have a good balance in your worship, so we don’t get too tired.

“Do what you can, for Allah does not get tired (of giving reward) until you get tired.”

(Bukhari, 5861)

If you take precautionary steps to protect your health, you can focus on your Ibadah with consistency.

Pace Yourself During Rituals when performing Umrah

It’s okay to go slow. If you go too fast, it will make you tired. When you feel tired, take a break in the shade or a cool place. What matters most is that your heart is pure, not how fast you finish. Save your energy so you can survive the whole day in the burning heat.

Prioritise Rest and Sleep

As we know, Umrah is physically demanding, and fasting takes a lot of energy. You should know how to manage yourself to stay focused on your Ibadah. Take naps! Try to rest for a little bit after prayers or between rituals.  When you’re not tired, you can pray better. The Prophet (PBUH) also rested to stay strong for worship.

Stay Spiritually Focused

Fasting is not only about avoiding food and drink but also about patience and self-control. The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Fasting is a shield, so let the one who is fasting not behave foolishly or impudently. And if someone argues with him or insults him, let him say: I am fasting.”

(Bukhari, Muslim)

If you feel tired or grumpy,  remind yourself of the great reward you get from fasting and from facing hardship for Allah’s sake. This thought can help you feel better and keep going.

Final Thoughts

Fasting and Umrah can be hard especially for British Muslims who may not be used to the heat and long hours of fasting in Makkah., but it is a test of your faith and strength. It seems hard, but you can do it. If you plan well, drink lots of water, eat healthy food, and get rest. Don’t rush. Remember, taking care of your body is a way to worship Allah, and He will reward your sincere efforts.

May Allah accept your Umrah, your fasts, and your du’as.
