Did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Perform Any Miracles?
When we talk about miracles, our thoughts often go to events that defy human understanding — Prophet Musa (AS) parting the sea, or Prophet Isa (AS) bringing the dead back to life by Allah’s permission. But one question often arises: Did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ perform any miracles?
The answer is yes. Miracles of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ granted by Allah, witnessed by his companions and recorded authentically in the Hadith. His miracles were not meant for show, but as signs of truth, mercy, and divine support. Among them are events that continue to inspire and strengthen the faith of believers today.
The Splitting of the Moon
One of the most well-known miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the splitting of the moon. When the Quraysh of Makkah demanded a sign to prove his Prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ pointed toward the moon — and by Allah’s command, it split into two distinct halves before joining again.
This event is mentioned in the Qur’an:
“The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.”
(Surah Al-Qamar, 54:1)
And it is also confirmed through authentic narration.
Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA) said:
“During the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ the moon was split into two parts; one part remained over the mountain, and the other part went beyond the mountain. On that, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, ‘Witness this miracle.’”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, 4864
Another narration in Sahih Muslim confirms this:
“‘Abdullah b. Mas‘ud reported that the moon was split up in two parts during the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ … the mountain covered one of its parts and one part of it was above the mountain and Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: ‘Bear witness to this.’”
— Sahih Muslim, 6725
This miracle was a clear sign, but it also teaches us that true faith does not come from seeing miracles alone — it comes from recognizing the truth when it reaches the heart.
Water Flowing from His Blessed Fingers
Another extraordinary event occurred during a journey when the companions ran out of water for ablution and drinking. The Prophet ﷺ placed his blessed hand into a small vessel, and miraculously, water began flowing from between his fingers until everyone present was able to drink and perform wudu.
Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah (RA) narrated:
“I was with the Prophet ﷺ and the time for the Asr prayer became due. We had no water with us except a little which was put in a vessel and was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He put his hand into it and spread out his fingers and then said, ‘Come along! Hurry up! All those who want to perform ablution. The blessing is from Allah.’ I saw the water gushing out from his fingers. So the people performed the ablution and drank, and I tried to drink more of that water (beyond my thirst and capacity) for I knew that it was a blessing.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, 5639
This miracles of Prophet Muhammad not only demonstrated Allah’s power but also the Prophet’s closeness to Him — a moment that left his companions in awe and strengthened their faith.
The Crying of the Tree Trunk
Before a pulpit was built in the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ used to deliver his sermons while leaning against a date-palm trunk. When the new pulpit was made, and he moved away from the trunk, those in the mosque heard a deep sound — as if the trunk was weeping. The Prophet ﷺ then went to it and embraced it until it became quiet.
This incident was reported by many companions and recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Musnad Ahmad. It shows the deep love even the natural world had for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The Greatest Miracle — The Qur’an
While many miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were seen by a few, his greatest miracle was meant for all of humanity: the Qur’an.
Revealed to a man who could not read or write, it stands unmatched in eloquence, wisdom, and divine truth. It challenges all of mankind:
“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:23)
No one has ever met that challenge. Over fourteen centuries later, the Qur’an remains preserved word for word, memorized by millions, and continues to guide people across the world. It is the living miracle that every believer can witness and experience personally.
Other Recorded Miracles
Authentic hadith sources record many other miracles, such as:
-
Food increasing in quantity through the Prophet’s blessings
-
Healing of the sick through his touch
-
Accurate prophecies about future events
-
Protection in battles despite overwhelming odds
Each of these miracles was not meant to amaze or entertain, but to confirm his truthfulness and guide people toward the worship of one God — Allah.
