History of the Quran

History of the Quran | How It Was Revealed and Preserved Over Time

The Quran is the holy book of Islam. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over 1,400 years ago. It did not come all at once but was sent down little by little over 23 years. This helped people understand and follow its teachings step by step.

How the History of the Quran Began: Revelation

The first verses of the Quran were revealed in 610 CE in a cave called Hira. Angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and said:
“Read in the name of your Lord.” (Surah Al-Alaq)

Over the next 23 years, different parts of the Quran were revealed, guiding people in their faith and daily life.

History of the Quran: Preservation in the Prophet’s Time

During the Prophet’s lifetime, the Quran was preserved in two ways:

  • Memorization – Many people, called Huffaz, memorized the Quran.
  • Writing – Scribes like Zaid bin Thabit wrote it down on palm leaves, bones, and leather.

The Prophet (PBUH) also told people where each verse should go in the Quran, keeping it in the right order.

First Compilation in the History of the Quran: Abu Bakr (RA)’s Era

After the Prophet (PBUH) passed away, a big battle called Yamama took place. Many Huffaz lost their lives, and people worried about losing the Quran.

Abu Bakr (RA), the first Caliph, asked Zaid bin Thabit to collect and write the Quran in one book. Zaid carefully checked everything with those who had memorized it to make sure it was correct. This first complete Quran was kept safe with Abu Bakr (RA) and later with Umar (RA) and Hafsa (RA) (the Prophet’s wife).

Standardizing the Quran: Uthman (RA)’s Contribution

As Islam spread to different places, people started reading the Quran in different ways. This caused confusion. Uthman (RA), the third Caliph, decided to fix this by making one official version of the Quran.

  • He asked Zaid bin Thabit and others to prepare this version.
  • Copies were made and sent to different cities.
  • Other versions were removed to keep the Quran the same everywhere.

Because of this, all Muslims read the same Quran today.

Why the History of the Quran Shows It Has Never Changed

Allah Himself promised to protect the Quran. In Surah Al-Hijr (15:9), Allah says:

“Indeed, We have sent down the Quran, and We will surely guard it.”

This is why the Quran has stayed the same for over 1,400 years—not a single word has changed.

Comparison: The Quran vs. Other Scriptures

Many other religious books, like the Bible, have changed over time. But the Quran has stayed exactly the same because:

  • It was memorized by thousands of people.
  • It was written down carefully.
  • It was checked and rechecked to make sure nothing was lost.

Significance of the Quran’s Preservation in History

The Quran’s preservation keeps Muslims united. No matter where you go in the world, every Muslim reads the same Quran. It is not just a book; it is a guide for life. It teaches us how to live with peace, kindness, and faith.

Conclusion: Why the History of the Quran Matters

The Quran is a miracle. It was revealed over 1,400 years ago and has been perfectly preserved through memorization and writing. Because of this, we can still read it today, exactly as it was given to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

If you want to find peace and guidance, start reading the Quran today. It will change your life.
